PRESS RELEASE

ARCHDEACON OF NORTHOLT TO BLESS ST JOHN’S WEMBLEY – UK’S FIRST ZERO-CARBON VICARAGE

On the 8th April 2011 the Archdeacon of Northolt, the Venerable Rachel Treweek formally blessed one of the country’s first ‘zero-carbon’ vicarages at St John’s Wembley last week. Together with members of St John’s parish and the new build’s project team, Archdeacon Treweek led the group in celebration of Wembley’s new beacon of sustainability.

The London Diocesan Fund, in partnership with ASRA Greater London Housing Association commissioned a new vicarage in the parish of Wembley, St John as part of a mixed use development including affordable housing and a church hall. The vicarage is one of the first in the country designed to comply with Level 6 of The Code for Sustainable Homes (the Code) and The Church Commissioners’ publication, Parsonages: A Design Guide, which demonstrates the Fund’s commitment to sustainability and the environment.[1]

Displaying eye-catching, ‘green’ features including roof-top solar panels, the distinctive vicarage is already attracting interest from the wider Wembley community. Built using sustainable materials and replete with innovative energy-saving measures, the vicarage has been accorded the Code’s highest sustainability rating – level 6 – and will be completely ‘zero carbon.’[2]

Archdeacon of Northolt, Rachel Treweek comments:

“I am delighted to preside over this blessing of St John’s vicarage, Wembley; an emblem of sustainable building. It’s a fantastic development for Wembley and, for the Church-at-large, who are working hard and collaboratively to lower the UK’s carbon footprint and take better care of the world God has given us. We’re extremely proud to be at the forefront of the fight against climate change, and this is a great example of our principles in practice.”

Vicar of St John’s Wembley, Reverend Francis Adu-Boachie comments:

“I am very excited about our new home. We are thankful and privileged to live in the first code 6 vicarage in the London Diocese. It is a life changing building which will affect how we live and manage our energy consumption. As a Parish we are committed to working with others on environmental issues and this building is both a sign and an example to the community of what can be achieved. There are lots of gadgets which we have to learn to operate and I’m looking forward to trying them all out!”

WEMBLEY CHARITIES

St John’s Church Wembley have a number of Children who attend church that are of school age and they possess many gifted talents, musically and  vocationally . We know there can sometimes be a strain financially on families to pay for examinations each year for their son/daughter to progress to the next stage. Therefore if there is anyone at St. Johns in that situation please contact Revd Francis for an application so that we may consider giving a small donation to pay for the fees. Wembley Charities is a small Educational Charity whose mission is to help children achieve their full educational potentional.
